July is Social Wellness Month, a time to focus on the importance of building and maintaining healthy relationships and a sense of belonging. It’s about nurturing connections with others, contributing to your community, and practicing self-care within social contexts.
As part of my commitment to helping authors, I’ll share some tips for maintaining a healthy approach to social wellness so you can boost your overall awareness.
Five Ways To Practice Social Wellness
Be Open
As writers, we often spend most of our time in a creative vacuum. While this approach definitely helps in crafting a good story, it shouldn’t become our default. It’s crucial that we make time to build and maintain strong work and social connections whenever possible. Balancing our work life with our social life is key to maintaining our overall wellness.

Certain groups can often make us feel intimidated and inferior, leading us to embellish details about who we are and what we’ve achieved. Building healthy relationships requires being open and honest about yourself. Let others see the real you by sharing your stories, expressing your feelings, and being emotionally vulnerable and genuine.
Volunteer
When you get right down to it, we are all writing to influence others with our story or message. That requires a good understanding of people and our communities as a whole. One of the best ways to connect with that community is by giving a little of your time to serve in some capacity.

Seek out chances to volunteer your free time for a cause you care about. This not only allows you to make a difference but also helps you gain valuable experience and meet like-minded people who share your values. Such opportunities can also lead to lasting friendships and can even motivate and inspire your creative work.
Find Common Interests
Writing can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, especially when you’re deep in the process and surrounded by people who can’t relate to your specific challenges. These moments call for connecting with other writers who understand our language and can provide the help we need.

This isn’t just limited to our roles as writers. It encompasses everything we are attracted to. A key part of forming lasting friendships is sharing common interests or experiences. And building those friendships requires us to find people who share similar interests and seek ways to connect through those enjoyable activities.
Attend Events
Common interests are so valuable and essential that organizations and groups go to great lengths to organize large conventions and events, allowing people to gather and connect over their shared passions. Whatever the interest or activity, chances are there’s an event or gathering set up specifically for people to discuss and enjoy it together.

Whatever the niche, events like these can provide engaging experiences that help you meet and connect with new people. For us, who are writers, there are writing conferences, writing groups, or other social gatherings that can help you make those connections.
Actively Listen
As writers, our enthusiasm for our own projects can often cause us to ramble on without giving others the chance to share what they’re passionate about. Social wellness only works when it benefits everyone involved.

Active listening is essential for developing strong communication skills and building meaningful relationships. Stay engaged with others when they share by maintaining good eye contact and asking thoughtful questions.
