September is Self-Care Month. It’s a time to focus on prioritizing our own physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. As writers, we spend a lot of time in our thoughts, creatively coming up with all kinds of ideas while fighting self-doubt and the challenges of the writing process. No easy task.
That’s why it’s important to take a step back sometimes from our creative endeavors and proactively spend a little time focusing on the things that help us stay in the right mindset. So here are a few tips to help you as you observe Self-Care Month.
Four Ways To Observe Self-Care Month
Ditch Self-Criticism
We often are our own harshest critics. Our minds have an idea, and we think we know precisely how to see it through. But usually, we find that what we conceive in our minds doesn’t quite account for the level of difficulty involved in completing such tasks. In times like these, it’s easy for us to become critical of ourselves and our inability to meet our own expectations. Such mindsets can cause us to spiral quickly into depression and even self-loathing, resulting in an unproductive lifestyle.

Beating yourself up is never the answer. Instead, choose to be kind to yourself by focusing less on your flaws and more on your positive qualities and character. Allow room for mistakes without judging yourself too harshly, and focus on your personal growth.
Progress Over Perfection
Have you ever noticed that visions and ideas we imagine in our minds are always perfect? Think about it. They’re always the pinnacle of perfection, right down to the tiniest details. The problem is that our minds often overlook the realities of the real world. Rarely do we see all the struggles and challenges we will face along the way toward the unreachable standards of perfection. And if we’re not careful, that ideal image can prevent us from taking action, as we wait for the perfect conditions to move forward.

If you spend your time striving for perfection, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Focus instead on your progress by building positive habits with the goal of improving and getting better every day.
Learn To Say No
All of us have an inherent desire to please others, but we should never let it interfere with our well-being. Taking on extra responsibilities beyond what we can handle can cause others to take advantage of our generosity and create false expectations. That’s why it’s essential to set proper boundaries to maintain a balanced lifestyle, especially when others become demanding of your time and attention.

Don’t let others control your schedule by spreading yourself too thin. Understand that it’s okay to say no to certain people and activities that conflict with your priorities or harm your well-being. Be quick to let go of any guilt when saying no, and remember that your own self-care should always come first.
Forgive Yourself
Despite your best efforts, you’ll inevitably fall short of your goals or someone else’s expectations. You might even mess up royally from time to time. But in those moments of regret, remember that nobody’s perfect. Not even you.

The truth is, you will make mistakes throughout your life, and you won’t always get it right. But there’s no need to hold yourself in contempt over your failures. Instead, look at those missteps as opportunities to examine where you’re falling short so that you can make adjustments in your approach. Be quick to forgive yourself for your mistakes, giving yourself every opportunity to learn and grow.
Summing it up
As you observe Self-Care Month, take time to reassess your priorities and commitments. Look for areas where you might be spreading yourself too thin and make adjustments. Consider what’s working and what isn’t so you can better care for yourself and set proper boundaries. Taking these steps will not only help you gain a better perspective but also improve your overall health, enabling you to be more productive throughout the day.
Try these tips and let me know if they help you prioritize your own self-care. Share your personal growth journey with others, and take steps to maintain healthy boundaries moving forward. Stay well. Stay balanced. And above all, keep writing!
Until next time,
