May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a dedicated time to raise awareness about the importance of quality mental health and our need to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. As writers, our ability to create is significantly affected by our capacity to think and function in daily life, which is why knowing how to boost your mental health is so crucial.
As part of my commitment to helping authors, I’ll share a few tips to boost your mental health so you can effectively manage your workflow and achieve your creative goals.

As writers, we rely heavily on our ability to express creativity. However, there are so many other aspects of this gift that we sometimes overlook or ignore. Developing an awareness of how you can broaden your creative horizons can significantly contribute to your overall mental health.

When writing becomes a source of stress or anxiety, it can be helpful to seek out other activities to regain your focus. Explore ways to unlock your creative potential by trying out areas you haven’t explored yet. Experiment with creating a new dish or try your hand at sketching or painting. Discovering new forms of creation not only enhances your skill set but can also help you regain control over your writing.
Set Boundaries
Maintaining healthy relationships is essential for promoting mental health. However, sustaining a positive outlook can be challenging if you don’t surround yourself with the right people. Left unchecked, toxic or negative relationships can significantly impact your overall well-being.

Reflect on the boundaries you need to establish for a more peaceful and enjoyable life. Share those boundaries with the people in your life and stick to them, regardless of whether they choose to respect them or not. Setting boundaries can be difficult and even uncomfortable, but it is often necessary to ensure an atmosphere of positivity that nurtures your creativity.
Share Your Story
Despite the progress we’ve made regarding mental health, there are still many people who suffer in silence. The inability or unwillingness to speak out about these issues often leads to wrong assumptions and can perpetuate the stigmas associated with certain mental health conditions.

Consider sharing your mental health story on social media or with close friends. Not only can this help you overcome your own challenges, but it can also contribute to reducing the stigma surrounding such challenges in your community.
