November is usually a time when we pause to give thanks and recognize our blessings. While that focus peaks around the Thanksgiving holiday, it’s also crucial to understand how important it is to practice gratitude every day and how it can improve our creative work.
As writers, it’s easy to get lost in our work and the challenges of the process. Since our mindset often focuses on whether or not we’re able to meet our goals, it can lead us to develop a performance-driven attitude. Our focus shifts to what we are trying to accomplish, which is precisely what hinders our appreciation for all the progress we’ve made along the way. With that said, here are a few tips to help you practice gratitude.
Four Ways To Practice Gratitude
Write About It
Journaling is an excellent way to show your gratitude. By writing down your deepest thanks, you create a story that records all the things and people you value, helping you build a healthy appreciation for everything that has positively affected you.

As writers, this is the most natural way we have to express our gratitude. While it doesn’t have to be a daily habit, it’s important to set aside time now and then to intentionally write down what we’re thankful for. Journal entries like these help remind us of how far we’ve come and the significance of staying consistent with our creative work. There’s also something about being able to go back review that journey, specifically when we find ourselves in the middle of a challenging or difficult season.
Appreciate Nature
Take mindful walks and intentionally seek out the beauty in the majesty of creation. Regularly absorbing the sights and sounds of nature can positively influence your mind, heart, and spirit, supporting your overall well-being.

Regularly taking time to appreciate creation also helps connect you with the Creator. When you recognize that everything in existence was masterfully made by God, it puts your life and existence into a perspective that naturally fosters gratitude. Whether it’s enjoying the colors of a stunning sunset or simply marveling at the ripples caused by dropping a stone into clear water, there’s joy and wonder to be found every day.
Acknowledge Progress
Take time to focus on the positive aspects of your creative journey by writing down all your accomplishments, strengths, and lessons learned. Be thankful for the wisdom you’ve gained from life’s experiences and for your resilience during tough times.

This particular tip speaks directly to us as writers. If you spend all your time grasping for things that remain outside your reach, you will never learn to appreciate the things you’ve already attained. Instead of always focusing on what you want to be, be thankful for where you are and for how far you’ve come.
Express It To Others
Seize every opportunity to show gratitude to those around you, regardless of who they are. Make it a habit to recognize every contribution, big or small, as you seek to find creative ways to appreciate those who serve you in some capacity.

Internal gratitude is never fully realized until it is genuinely expressed outwardly to someone else. Sharing your appreciation with God, a loved one, a friend, an acquaintance, or even a complete stranger not only ministers to them but also benefits you.
Summing it up
Focusing on gratitude not only benefits you but also helps those around you. Being proactive by seeking out the good in things and people can help you build a greater appreciation for everything and everyone in your life.
What are some other ways you can express and practice gratitude? Who do you need to thank in your life? How can you actively focus on your progress and appreciate what you’ve learned along the way? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
